Pedigree of Prince William of Wales
table prepared by Clifton R. Fox Professor of History Tomball College Tomball, TX, USA September 6, 1997 e-mail comments: clifton.fox@nhmccd.edu
Each living person has
two parents, four grandparents, eight great-grandparents,etc.
and an additional doubling of ancestors for each additional generation back which we examine. Ten generations back -- 300 years ago -- each of us has more than 1,000 ancestors [although some may be duplicates]. Twenty generations back, each of us possesses 1 million ancestors.
In the case of royal or aristocratic persons, we often ignore ancestry in many lines, especially female lines. The reality is that even persons of royal rank are descended from many ordinary people.
The ancestry of Prince William of Wales illustrates the point. The TABLE I to the right lists the 127 persons, starting with Prince himself, who comprise the first six generations of his forbearers. To read the table, remember the following rule:
for each individual numbered X, the father's number is 2X and the mother's number is 2X+1. For example, King George V is #16, so his parents are #32 and #33.
In the sixth generation of Prince William's pedigree, 28 of the 64 individuals are commoners [to the best of my knowledge].
A deeper lineage restricted to Prince William's descent from British monarchs can be found here.
The Spencer family is traced here. TABLE I Six Generation Pedigree of Prince William of Wales
