1749 August 8, born in Frankfurt, Germany. His father is Johann Caspar Goethe, * 1710, +1782, his mother Katharina Elisabeth Textor, *1731, +1808. 

1759 Frankfurt was occupied by the French during the Seven Year War from 1756 to 1763. 

1764 Coronation of Emperor Joseph II. 

1765 Starting October until 1768 he was a student at the University in Leipzig and wrote the bookd *Laune des Verliebten* and *Annette*. 

1768-70 Lived in Frankfurt 

1770 Lived from March 1770 to August 1771 in Strassburg (Strasbourg) and visited Sesenheim, Friederike Brion (*1752, +1813). He becomes a Licentiate of Law. 

1771-72 Again in Frankfurt; short period of legal practice. Frankfurter Gelehrte-Anzeigen. Von deutscher Baukunst.

1772 Stayed from May until September in Wetzlar. Lotte Buff, marries Kestner (1753-1828). 

1773-75 Back to Frankfurt. Farces, poems, Clavigo, Shrovetide plays, started to work on Faust and Egmont, Werther. And got engaged to Lili Schoenemann (*1758,+1817). 

1775 From May to July he visited Switzerland and went in November back to Weimar at the invitation of the Duke Karl August (*1757,+1828). 

1776 Got appointed to be a member of the Council. Charlotte von Stein (*1742,+1827). 
Die Geschwister. Mining project in Ilmenau. 

1777 Stayed November and December in the Harz mountains. 

1778 Visited Berlin in May (Bavarian War of Succession, 1778-1779). 

1779 President of War Commission, Director of Roads and Services. Iphigenie in prose. Took a second journey to Switzerland in September-January 1780. 

1782 Was granted diploma of nobility. Took over financial affairs. 

1784 Anatomy, discovery of the human os intermaxillare

1785 Negotiations over the Prince's League. Studied botany. 

1786 September until June 1788 journey to Italy. Iphigenie in verse, Egmont, Tasso.

1788 Release from the daily businesses of the government. Christiane Vulpius (*1765,+1816). Roemische Elegien.

1789 Birth of Goethes son August in December (+1830), the only survivor of five children. 

1790 The publication of Goethe's Writings in eight small volumes was completed. March and June he spent in Venice. Venezianische Epigramme. In July until October he had active service in Silesia. He studied anatomy, botany and optics. Metamorphose der Pflanzen. Takes over the direction of the Court Theatre. Gross-Kophta, Beitraege zur Optik, 2 volumes. 

1792 August-November, French campaign. (First Coalition War 1792-1797). Brandnew writings srated to appear in 7 volumes. 

1793 Wrote Reineke Fuchs und der Buergergeneral. May - July, Siege of Mainz. 

1794 marks the beginning of his close association with Friedrich Schiller (*1759,+1805). Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre (was completed in 1796). 

1795 Schrieb die Horen. Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten, Maerchen

1796 Schrieb Xenien mit Schiller. Hermann und Dorothea. 

1797 Balladen. Took a trip to South Germany and Switzerland from July until November (Congress of Rastatt, 1797-1798). 

1798 Periodical. Schrieb die Propylaen (finished in 1800). 

1799 2nd Coalition War 1799-1802. Achilleis.

1801 Had a serious attack of erysipelas.

1803 Several visits to the Frommann family in Jena, in which house he meets 1807 Wilhelmine Herzlieb (*1789,+18650. (Reichsdeputationshauptschluss, end of the Holy Roman Empire). Schrieb die natuerliche Tochter.

1804 Napoleon was proclaimed Emperor. Madame de Stael. Winckelmann

1805 Death of his friend Schiller. Friendship with Zelter (*1758,+1832). Had serious kidney problems. 

1806 Was married to Christiane Vulpius. October 14, Battle of Jena. Occupation of Weimar. Formation of the Rheinbund. 

1807 Competed the first part of Faust. Pandora.

1808 Meeting with Napoleon Bonaparte at the Congress in Erfurt. (End of the Third Coalition War 1805-1807). Publication of the first part of his Faust in first collected edition of the works in 12 volumes (1806-1808. 

1809 Wahlverwandschaften. He started to write on his memoirs. (Napoleon's campaign against Austria. Uprisings in Calabria, Spain and Tirol).

1811 Aus meinem Leben: Dichtung und Wahrheit (in 6 volumes, 1811-1822). 

1812 Meetings with the Empress Maria Ludovica of Austria and Beethoven. Napoleon's Russian caompaign also started. 

1813 Visited Teplitz from April until August. Russia, Prussia and Austria are joining the war against Napoleon. Battle of Leipzig on October 16-18; Napoleon's abdication in April 1814; Napoleon was exiled to Elba; Congress of Vienna. 

1814 Trip to the Rhine and Main. Marianna von Willemer (*?,+1860. Des Epimenides Erwachen.

1815 Took again a trip to the Rhine and Main area; took with Freiherr von Stein a trip to Cologne. Second collected edition of the works in 20 volumes (1815-1819). Weimar becomes a grand duchy. The Hundred Days: Waterloo; Napoleon was banished to St. Helena.

1816 Death of his wife Christiane. Periodical Kunst und Alterthum, which he continued until 1832. 

1817 Was dismissed from his directorship at the Court Theatre. Marriage of Goethes son August to Ottilie von Pogwisch (*1796,+1872) and had 3 grandchildren: Walter (*1819,+1885), Wolfgang (*1820,+1883) and Alma (*1828,+1845). Periodical Zur Naturwissenschaft, which he continued until 1824. Celebration on the Wartburg in October.

1819 Westoestlicher Diwan. First performance of scenes from Faust in the city of Berlin.

1821 Wrote Wilhelm Meistes Wanderjahre, Part One. 

1823 Serious sickness at the beginning of the year. Johann Peter Eckermann (*1792,+1854 is visiting Weimar. Goethe spent June until September in Bohemia und meets Ulrike von Levetzow (*1804,+1899) in Marienbad. Marienbader Elegie.

1825 Resumed work on Faust's second part. 

1826 Last collected edition of the works: 1826-1831, 40 volumes; 1833-1842 as well as 20 further columes of which volume 1 (1833) comprises the second part of Faust. Goethe sees Schillers skull. Poem in terza rima. Novelle.

1827 Wrote the Chinesisch-Deutschen Jahres- und Tageszeiten. 

1830 Death of his son in Rome, Italy. Interest in the Cuvier-Geoffroy controversy at the Paris Academy. Revolutin in Paris/France in July; also the beginning of the reign of Louis Philippe, the *Citizen King*. 

1831 His last birthday in Ilmenau. Will. Completion of Faust.

1832 March 14 his last drive, becomes ill on March 16 and dies on March 22. On March 26 he was buried in the Princes' Vault.
