His father, Mr. Wilhem van Ruytenburgh, was wealthy and influential and, from 1639 till 1652, one of the powerful Regents of the city of Amsterdam. Aelbert was baptised in there on 16 May 1630. On 17 July 1665 he became captain of a regiment of foot-soldiers employed by the Province of Holland and, on 22 November 1669, was appointed Sergeant-Major of a regiment of 'sea-soldiers'. Later he became Lieutenant-Colonel and Commander of the city of Sas-van-Gent. Against the wishes of her family, in 1671 he married Wilhelmina Anna van Nassau, a granddaughter of Prince Maurits, and they became the parents of two children. He was probably only about fifty-seven when he died in Delft on 6 January 1688 and was buried in Vlaardingen.
