He was in the household of James IV, King of Scots, and received a
large portion of the lands of the Earls of Mar, including the Barony of
Kildrummy. Before 1507 he married Elizabeth Barlow, an English lady attached
to the Court of Margaret, Queen Consort of James IV. On the occasion of
the christening of Arthur, the king's son, on 14 January
1510 he was made a Lord of Parliament as Lord Elphinstone. With his
king he was slain, on 9 September 1513, at the Battle of Flodden. In 1515
his widow became the third wife of Lord Forbes and died about 10 September
1518.
