Alfonso II "the Fat", King of
Portugal 1212-1223, (1185-1223)
Born 23 April 1185
Died 25 March 1223 Santarem
Married 1206
Urraca of Castile
Died 3 November 1220
As his nickname
'the Fat' might indicate, unlike his father and
grandfather,
he was no soldier. By his greedy appropriation of church
revenues he
renewed the ecclesiastical disputes. This led to another
papal interdict
which was still in force in 1223 when Alfonso II died.
