Alfonso III "O Restaurador",
King of Portugal 1248-1279, (1210-1279)
Born 5 May 1210 Coimbra
Died 16 February 1279 Lisbon
Married 1253
Beatriz of Castile
Heiress of Alcozea, Salmeran & Vadesliras
Born 1242
Died 27 October 1303
His brother, having brought anarchy to Portugal by an unfortunate
marriage was
forced to go into exile and died in Spain, deserted by
the wife for
whom he had lost his throne. As a result, Alfonso III
succeeded his
brother as King of Portugal in 1248. He continued and
completed the
reconquest of lands lost to the Moors and
consequently
was the first Portugese monarch to be styled 'King of
Portugal and
the Algarves'.
In 1253 he divorced his wife and, according to some, contracted a
bigamous marriage
with Beatrice, an illegitimate daughter of King
Alfonso X of
Castile. His first wife died in 1262 and a year later
Pope Urban IV
regularized the second marriage, thus removing the
stigma of illegitimacy
from his son, Diniz. Alfonso III was the first
Portugese sovereign
to call a Cortes, the beginnings of parliamentary
government.
