In 1714, when he was twenty-six years of age, he ran away with his
cousin, the fifteen-year-old Eleanor Agnew. On 12 May 1714 they married
in St.Benet's Paul's Wharf, London, with their post-nuptial settlement
dated 22 April 1719. They then became the parents of seven sons and eleven
daughters. Upon his father's resignation, be became 12th Hereditary Sheriff
of Galloway in 1724; and when his father died in 1735, he became Sir Andrew
Agnew, 5th Baronet. In 1747 all Hereditary Jurisdictions were abolished
in Scotland for which he received compensation of 4,000 pounds sterling.
Having entered the army, in 1745 he was in command of the government
troops at Blair Castle against the Young Pretender. He was also Governor
of Tinmouth Castle and, in 1759, Lieutenant-General.
