A Colonel in the Army, he became M.P. for Stirling and afterwards for
Grampound, as well as Governor of Dominica. When on 20 November 1793 he
married Lady Georgiana Hope-Johnstone, daughter of the 3rd Earl of Hopetoun,
he assumed the additional surname of Johnstone. They became the parents
of one daughter but, after less than four years of
marriage, his wife died.
On 21 March 1803 he married Amelia Constance Gertrude Etienette, widow
of Reymond Godet, of Martinique, and only child and heir of the Baron de
Clugny, Governor of Guadeloupe.
