Anna de Merode was the daughter of Jean IX de Merode, Lord of Petershem,
and Margareta van Pallant. She was regarded as a romantic heroine when
she eloped with Thomas Morgan, an English colonel who was Governor of Bergen-op-Zoom.
However, this marriage was not to last for very long and, as Morgan's
widow, on 4 December 1597, she married Justinus van Nassau and they became
the parents of three children.
For many years they lived in Breda where Justinus was Governor. However,
when the Spanish forces took this city, they moved to Leiden where Justinus
died in 1631 and Anna in 1634.
