He married Cicely, daughter and heir of Thomas Hurland, Esq. of Fothergay, co. Northampton and, as a result, settled there. However, from liberal habits and the expenses incurred by entertaining Queen Elizabeth I at his seat, he became so much involved in debt that he disposed of the greater part of his landed possessions to discharge the incumbrances.
