Even though it was his mother who had contrived his marriage to Princess
Luise of Prussia, a niece of Frederick the Great, it turned out a genuine
love-match. Her cousin, Friedrich Wilhelm II, King of Prussia, intimated
that a generous wedding settlement would be welcome. As a result, Antoni's
parsimonious father bought him a magnificent residence in Berlin and an
estate in the Prussian zone of occupied Poland.
A patron of the arts, Antoni wrote the first musical score for Goethe's
'Faust' and became the friend and patron of Chopin. In 1818 he was appointed
viceroy of the Grand Duchy of Poznan, created by the Prussians from the
Polish territory they had annexed. This suggests
how greatly he was respected by the Russian government, a status further
enhanced by being granted Nieswiez and Olyka by the tsar.
