Archduke Joseph of Austria, Palatine of Hungary and
Princess Maria Adelheid of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, Duchess
of Saxony
Born 9 August 1872 Alscot
Died 6 July 1962 Rain nr Straubing
Named after her paternal grandmother, Archduchess Auguste Ferdinande,
she grew up in Munich. There, on 15 November 1893, she married one of the
Hungarian Habsburgs, Archduke Joseph, and they became the parents of six
children, living in their residence at Alcsuth in Hungary.
During the First World War she spent her time nursing the wounded and
also helped out financially. She wanted to go to the front but this was
vetoed by her grandfather, Emperor Franz Joseph. She then founded the movement
'Gold fuer Eisen' (Gold for Iron) and, after the war, was patron of several
charities.
At the end of 1944 the family left Hungary to move first to the United
States, then to Regensburg where she stayed with her sister-in-law, Fuerstin
Margarete von Thurn und Taxis. On 6 July 1962
in Rain near Straubing, her husband died. She herself then died in
Regensburg on 25 June 1964.
