Daughter of a tradesman, she met King Fredrik VI of Denmark about 1808.
She was given a house in Toldbodgade in Kopenhagen, where Fredrik VI spent
most of his spare time. She improved herself by taking lessons. In 1814
they were the parents of three children when Fredrik VI departed to attend
the Congres of Vienna, and stayed for nine months. He had an affair in
Vienna with Caroline Seyffarth and Bente took a lover and became pregnant.
This child was born on the 27th of March 1816. Fredrik VI broke off their
affair only to resume it in 1818 and they produced their fourth child.
She remained his mistress for the rest of the king's life and was Denmark's
last 'maitresse-en-titre'.
