Eldest son of Robert Guiscard, he distinguished himself in his father's
war against the Byzantine emperor, Alexis Comnenos. After his father's
death he was excluded from the throne of Apulia by his brother Roger, and
only gained the principality of Tarentum after a
long struggle.
He joined the crusade of 1096 and took a prominent part in the capture
of Antiochia (1098). While the other crusaders advanced to storm Jerusalem,
Boemund established himself as prince in Antiochia.
He was taken prisoner, however, in 1100 by a Turkish Emir and remained
two years in captivity. He then returned to Europe to collect troops and,
after defeating Alexius, was acknowledged by him as prince of Antiochia.
