Lady Brilliana Harley was celebrated for her gallant defence of Brampton
Castle, during the civil wars, when invested, in 1643, by the rebels, whom
she forced to raise the siege after seven weeks of unavailing hostility.
Her Ladyship dying, however, in the October following, the besiegers returned
to the castle, which, after a second gallant resistance, being forced to
surrender, was burnt to the ground.
