Carel van Nassau, (1612-1637)
Born circa 1612 Delft

Margaretha van Bodeghem, daughter of Jan van Bodeghem and
Catharina Schrams
Died before 23 August 1675
Prince Maurits had a long affair with Margaretha van Mechelen by whom
he fathered his first three illegitimate children. However, army life was
rough and lonely, resulting in several more illegitimate
children. Sadly, only the children of Margaretha van Mechelen were
regarded almost as members of the family as it was expected that Maurits
would marry her. His other illegitimate children were hardly aware of each
other yet were not neglected.
Carel was born about 1612 in Delft as son of Prince Maurits and Jobghen
van Alphen. In 1618 his mother married Hans Romer who owned a pub in The
Hague. On 24 March 1626 Carel became a student in Leiden. In 1630 he married
Margaretha van Bodeghem and fathered one daughter.
He then joined the army and went to Brazil with Count Johann Moritz
von Nassau-Siegen. Here he died in battle at Ponto Calvo on 28 March 1637.
His widow married three more husbands.
