A Spanish Grandee of the 1st class, Prince of Amblise and Epinoy, Chamberlain,
Privy Councillor, Field Marshall and Knight of the Golden Fleece, he was
well-known for his wit and his military talent, was moreover Governor of
Mons and the owner of an infantry regiment. Count Harrach described him
as: "A great lord, as brave as Caesar, the best and honest man in the world,
always full of life, as good as you are, who would not love him?" On 6
August 1755 he married Princess Maria Franziska von Liechtenstein and they
became the parents of six children. After having lived in Belgium, in 1794
they took up permanent residence in Austria. His wife became used to his
infidelities and let herself get carried away by love as well. Only one
such relationship of her is known and in it sensual love was never a part.
However, the Prince was very fond of the object of her feelings and treated
him as his best friend, so certain was he of the perfect innocence of that
Count's relations with his wife. The Prince de Ligne died during the course
of a pernicious streptococcal inflammation at the age of seventy-nine,
on the 13th December 1814 in Wien. His wife died there on 17 May 1821.
