The third son of the 3rd Duke of Portland, this member of an able and
distinguished family was somewhat of a shadowy figure. He was a background
figure compared with the great men of the Regency scene. He held a commission
as Lieutenant-Colonel in the Army but this did not
imply military prowess as it was a commission which had been purchased.
His fist wife, Georgiana Augusta Frederica Seymour, was a daughter of
Mrs. Grace Elliot, author of "A Journal of my Life during the French Revolution".
However, she had been interesting for more reasons. As a young woman she
had divorced an elderly husband but her own brother, to avoid scandal,
had placed her in a nunnery near Paris.
Nevertheless, she then became the mistress of 'Philippe Egalit‚', Duke
of Orleans, Lord Cholmondeley and the Prince of Wales. Consequently, her
daughter received the feminised names of the Prince of Wales together with
Seymour as a surname. Lord Charles became Equerry to the Prince Regent
and, having married Georgiana Seymour, may well have been the Prince's
son-in-law.
As a widower, he eloped with and subsequently married Lady Abdy.He had
fathered only one daughter in his first marriage but from the second two
sons and two daughters were born.
