Landing in Ireland in 1600, he joined the war against O'Neil and, in
1602, was at the siege of Kingsale. In 1605 he was made Provost Marshal
of Connaught for life and Sheriff for County Cork in 1606. The Lord Deputy
of Ireland knighted him on 5 November 1616. Before 1617 he married Dorothea
Cuffe and, in 1620, was made Vice President of Connaught. On 2 April 1621
he was made a Baronet.
From 1639 till his death he was M.P. for Queen's County. In 1641 he
greatly distinguished himself against the Irish rebels. At one time he
was forty-eight hours on horseback when, in April 1642, heeffected the
famous passage through Mountrath woods for the relief of Birr. He died
7 May 1642, being slain in a sally to protect the town of Trim.
