Charles Godefroy de La Tour
d'Auvergne, Duc de Bouillon (1706-1771)
Born 16 July 1706
Died 24 October 1771
Married 2 April 1724
Princess Marie Charlotte Sobieska, daughter of Prince
Jacques Louis Henri Sobieski and Pfalzgraefin Hedwig
Elisabeth von Pfalz-Neuburg
Born 25 November 1697
Died 8 May 1740
His elder brother, Frederic Maurice, Prince de Turenne, went to Germany
to marry Princess Marie Charlotte Sobieska in Strasburg on 20 September
1723 but, after an accident on 1 October 1723, he died. As a result, Charles
Godefroy became his father's heir and, as well, married his brother's widow
on 2 April 1724. In 1725 a daughter was born and then a son in 1728.
When his father died in 1730, Charles Godefroy became Duc de Bouillon
and Great Chamberlain of France. He was regarded as a rake and around 1744
upset his wife by having a passionate affaire with his own attractive young
step-mother, Louise Henriette Francoise de Lorraine.
In January 1745, 'the Young Pretender', Charles Edward Stuart, obtained
permission from King Louis XV of France to contact Charles Godefroy as
the latter, through his Sobieska marriage, was his uncle. They took an instant
liking to each other and soon Charles became part of the Duc's family.
However, Charles Godefroy took exception when he found his married daughter
to be pregnant by Charles Stuart and, to prevent a public scandal, ended
their affaire.
