Invalided out of World War I in 1916, he joined the staff of Earl Buxton,
Governor-General of South-Africa, whose daughter he married. After the
war he worked as a land agent until he succeeded to the title. He was an
expert agriculturalist, pioneered the reclamation of the heath of the Breckland
on the Euston estate, and planted many shelter belts of trees. He also
developed a prosperous stud of Suffolk horses.
