He was born son of the Hon. Fitzroy Henry Richard Stanhope who was a
younger brother of the 4th and 5th Earls of Harrington. In 1839, in Paris,
he married Elizabeth Still Pearsall whose father lived at Wartensee Castle,
St. Gall, in Switzerland and they became the parents of twelve children.
In 1866 he succeeded his cousin and became 7th Earl of Harrington.
He died in 1881 aged seventy-one at Harrington House, Craigs Court.
His widow survived him until 1912 when she died from heart failure, having
broken a leg some time before.
