Born 2 April 1799 at Sydney Lodge, near Southampton, son of Vice
Admiral Sir Joseph Sydney Yorke K.C.B.; was educated at Harrow School
and at the Royal Naval College. In 1815 he entered the Royal Navy and
was at the bombardment of Algiers in August 1816. He climbed the ranks
and in 1854 became Rear Admiral, in 1858 Vice Admiral and in 1863
Admiral. As well, in 1834, he had succeeded his uncle as 4th Earl of
Hardwicke.
Conservative M.P. for Reigate 1831-1832 and for County Cambridge
1832-1834; Lord Lieutenant for Cambridgeshire 1834-1873; became a
Lord-in-waiting 1841-1846; President of the Royal Agricultural Society
1843; Councillor of the Duchy of Lancaster 1847; Postmaster General
in
1852; Lord Privy Seal February 1858 to June 1859. He died at Sydney
Lodge, 17 September 1873, aged seventy-four.
