As a major, 10th Hussars, he served in South Africa in 1900 and 1901, and was severely wounded there. In the First World War he was mentioned in despatches, received the D.S.O. and, on 13 May 1915, was killed in action.
On 25 November 1909 he had married his cousin, Lady Helen Ogilvy, and they became the parents of two daughters, the second born after his death.
