A General in the army, he commanded the Artillery 4th Division at Balaklava,
Inkerman and Sebastopol and R. H. Artillery during the Indian Mutiny. He
became a Knight Grand Cross of the Bath and an Officer Legion of Honour.
On 17 April 1861 he married Lady Maria Liddell but they remained childless.
