Mademoiselle de Montcavrel was just twenty when she married Louis de
Brancas, Duc de Villars et de Lauraguais, and became known as Madame de
Lauraguais. In 1739 her eldest sister, Madame de Mailly, became the mistress
of King Louis XV, only to be replaced by their sister Madame de Vintimille
who died in childbirth in 1741. It was then that their youngest sister,
Madame de La Tournelle, became the official 'maitresse en titre' and Duchesse
de Chateauroux. When three years
later the Duchesse de Chateauroux died, the king was left inconsolable
and depressed and turned temporarily to Madame de Lauraguais. Soon, however,
her place was taken by Madame de Pompadour.
