He was approximately seven years old when his father died and so it
was his mother who acted as Regent. As a very young Count he was confronted
with an uprising from the West-Friesians who were supported by his younger
brother Floris. After at first defeating them in the winter of 1131, the
struggle continued for almost another year. On 26
October 1132, his brother Floris, perhaps only seventeen years old,
was killed.
As he received the support of his uncle, the Emperor Lothar, he was
able to add the Rijnland to his county. In 1139 he went on a crusade to
the Holy Land.
