He was about nine years old when, on 6 October 1829 on board the "Lotus",
he arrived with his parents in Western Australia. From 1843 till 1851 he
was in the Native Police and, in 1848, a constable in Bunbury. On 4 May
1847 he married Theodosia Sophia Hall and they
became the parents of three sons and five daughters. In Bunbury he
was a timber merchant and storekeeper. In 1859 he was a Bridgetown settler
grazier on "Blackwood Park". As a member of the Nelson Road Board, he became
its secretary and chairman. He employed 58 ticket-of-leave men during the
period 1863 till 1875.
