The famous Derby horse race is named after the 12th Earl of Derby who
instituted it at Epsom in 1780. Today the 18th Earl is just as interested
in horses. He has 18 in training and also owned a œ250,000 stake in Shergar,
the Irish horse valued at œ10 million which was kidnapped in 1983 and never
found again.
He owns 30,000 acres in Merseyside and also has a Newmarket estate.
Part of Knowsley House, an ancestral home, is let to the local police.
