ELEANOR, ARCHDUCHESS OF AUSTRIA (1498-1558)
Born 15 November 1498 Bruxelles
Died 18 February 1558 Talaveruela
dghtr of Archduke Philip of Austria and Infanta Juana of Aragon
Married:
Manuel I *The Great* , King of Portugal
Francois I, King of France
Eldest daughter of Philip Le Bel of Burgundy and
Juana La Loca of Spain
When Charles V took Francois I prisoner, after
the battle of Pavia, one of the conditions he set for the French king's
release was that Francois should marry Charles' sister Eleanor, the widow
of Manoel I of Portugal. Not surprisingly, in view of this humiliation,
Francois disliked her from the start. Indeed, Eleanor's life at the
French court cannot have been pleasant: her husband neglected her
in favour of a whole series of mistresses (though the neglect was not total,
since it was rumoured that he had given his wife syphilis!), the French
traditionally disliked the Austrians ( as Marie Antoinette would discover
in her turn), and war broke out between her husband and her brother again
and again.
One of Eleanor's ladies-in-waiting told Brantome
that while the queen looked normal when dressed, "when undressed
she was seen to have the trunk of a giantess, so long and big was her body,
yet going lower, she seemed a dwarf, so short were her thighs and legs".
Eleanor had one daughter, Maria of Portugal, by
her first husband; she and Francois had no children.
