Ferdinand III, Holy Roman Emperor 1637-1657, son of
Ferdinand II, Holy Roman Emperor 1619-1637 and Princess
Maria Anna of Bavaria
Born 13 July 1608 Graz
Died 2 April 1657 Wien
On 30 April 1651 in Wiener Neustadt, she became the third wife of Emperor
Ferdinand III and they parented four children. Eleonore supported religious
orders and, in 1663, founded the Ursulinen convent in Vienna. She was elected
patron of a Carmelite order, founded in 1662 in Wiener Neustadt, as well
as of an order named 'Sklavinnen der Tugend' (female slaves of virtue,
for noble ladies). In 1668, to celebrate the survival of a convent from
a huge fire, she was involved in the forming of the 'Sternkreuzorden',
also meant for noble ladies from Austria as well as from foreign countries.
Eleonora was a highly intelligent woman with literary and musical interests,
whereby she did not discriminate against protestant authors. She became
the centre of a literary academy founded by her
husband on an Italian model. In 1657 she became a widow but remained
the centre of the Imperial court of her stepson, Emperor Leopold I, gave
parties, had comedies and ballets performed and wrote Italian poems mainly
with religious contents. Aged fifty-six she died in Vienna on 6 December
1686.
