When only twelve years old he was sent to France with his brother to
be given a catholic education by his uncle, Don Christoffel. From 1619
until 1623 he was Stadhouder of Orange on behalf of his uncle, Prince Maurits.
In 1626 he went with his father to the Spanish Netherlands and joined the
Spanish army.
On 15 July 1628 he became a priest and a Carmelite, causing his mother
to disinherit him. However, in Delft on 15 January 1634, he joined both
the Reformed Church and the Dutch army.
Taking part in a battle on 26 August 1638, he was captured by the Spanish
and imprisoned in a convent in Brussels. In 1643 he escaped and again returned
to the Reformed Church and became Governor of Steenwijk and Commander of
Elburg.
In 1646 he married Countess Johanna von Hanau-Muenzenberg and they
produced four daughters. Emanuel died in Schagen on 27 October 1666 and
was buried in Delft.
