ARCHDUKE ERNST OF AUSTRIA (1553-1595)
Born: 15 JUN 1553 Vienna, AUSTRIA
Died: 20 FEB 1594/95 Brussels, BELGIUM
Buried: 15 MAR 1599/00 St. Gudula, Brussels, Belgium
son of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian II and Maria,
Archduchess von Austria+Infanta of Spain
The emperor sent his sons, Rudolf and Ernst, to complete their education
at the court of Spain, as if it was a university. When the archdukes
returned to Vienna, according to the Venetian ambassador, "These princes
have also brought something with them from their education in Spain ...
a certain hauteur, not only in their demeanour but in every other aspect
of their behaviour, which makes them - I should prefer to avoid the disagreeable
word 'hated', but at any rate much less beloved than they could be.
For their manner is quite contrary to the custom of this country, which
expects in the prince a somewhat familiar way of speaking ... and when
they came back from Spain, His Majesty noticed this and drew their attention
to it and told them to mend their manners ... and since that had little
or no effect, he was forced one day, to save their face, to say laughingly
that they behaved like that even with him - implying that it was not pride
that made behave as they did..."
