As Ferdinand IV he was King of Naples, 1759-1799 and 1799-1806, and
of the Two Sicilies, 1816-1825. He joined England and Austria against France
in 1793, suppressed the rench-supported Roman Republic in 1799, but in
1801 was forced to make a treaty with Napol‚on. In 1806 he took refuge
in Sicily under English protection, but was reinstated by the Congress
of Vienna in 1815. In 1816 he united his two states into the Kingdom of
the Two Sicilies and, despite demands for
constitutional government, retained a harsh absolutism.
