The younger brother of the Emperor Maximilian, Ferdinand had the unusual hobby of collecting portraits of freaks and villains.  He sent emissaries all over Europe for the purpose of collecting these portraits, and if, possible, would have the subjects sent to his court, so that a portrait could be made on the spot.  Among his collection, still to be seen in the 'Frankenstein Gallery' of his home, Schloss Ambras, near Innsbruck, were portraits of Vlad Tsepes Dracula, of a hair-covered 'Wolfman', his pretty wife and their hairy children, and of Gregor Baxi, a Hungarian knight who survived for a year with a large stake through his head, thereby making medical history. (Note:  these portraits can be seen on the Kunsthistorisches Museum website)

Ferdinand married , for love, a mere Baroness, Philipine Welser;  it was a morganatic marriage: their children were not permitted to inherit any Imperial titles.
