To end the skirmishes with the bishopric of Utrecht, which he had inherited
from his father, Floris II acknowledged the Bishop of Utrecht to be his
overlord while retaining the rule of his county. In 1101 the title of "Count
of Holland" is used for the first time.
In 1133, his widow, Geertruid of Lorraine, founded the Abbey of Rijnsburg.
She was regent for their son, Dirk VI, during his minority. Through the
support of Emperor Lothar, Geertruid's half-brother, Rijnland was added
to the county of Holland.
