In 1161 he made peace with the West Friesians. In a struggle over Zeeland
he became imprisoned in Flanders in 1167. In 1176 he supported Emperor
Friedrich Barbarossa in the battle of Legnano, for which he received an
imperial toll-post at Geervliet. In 1180 he restrained the West Friesians
and participated, in 1189, in the third crusade which
brought him to Antiochia where he died.
