Lady Frances Elizabeth Clavering-Cowper
(1820-1880)
daughter of Peter Leopold Clavering-Cowper, 5th Earl Cowper
and Hon. Emily Mary Lamb
Born 9 February 1820 London

Robert Jocelyn, Viscount Jocelyn
Born 20 February 1816
Died 12 August 1854 Carlton Gardens
In 1837 the Queen herself chose her, "then in the full bloom of her
beauty", as one of the train-bearers at the Coronation. On 2 August 1839
her uncle, Lord Beauvale, wrote that "all people tell me she is a straight
forward honest dear girl without coquetry."
On 27 April 1841 in London, she married Robert, Viscount Jocelyn, heir
of the Earl of Roden, and they became the parents of five children. From
1841 till 1867 she was a Lady of the Bedchamber
and, after 1867, an Extra Lady of the Bedchamber. On 12 August 1854
her husband died of cholera and, as a result, it was their son who became
the next Earl of Roden.
In February 1869, according to Malmesbury, she was thrown out of a
cab and much hurt. On 26 March 1880, aged sixty, she died in Cannes.
