Educated at Marlborough, Trinity College, Cambridge. From 1931
till 1933, he was Curate
of St.Mary's Portsea; from 1933 till 1936,
Chaplain Trinity College,
Cambridge; from 1936 till 1939,
Vice-Principal Wells Theological
College.
From 1939 till 1945, in the Royal Army Chaplains Department, he
served in France, Egypt
and the United Kingdom. From 1945 till 1952 he
was Vicar of Huddersfield;
from 1947 till 1952 Hon. Canon of
Wakefield; in 1951 and 1952,
Chaplain to HM King George VI. In 1952 he
became Bishop of Middleton,
which he remained until 1957. From 1957
till 1977, he was Archbishop
of Melbourne and, from 1971 till 1977 was
Primate of Australia. In
1972 he was knighted.
