He was the only illegitimate child of Frederik Hendrik, Prince of Orange, by Margaretha Catharina Bruyns. On 15 March 1640 he was given the property of Zuylenstein and, on 27 August 1640, became a captain of the Infantry. On 27 May 1645 he was appointed Lieutenant Colonel of
a Utrecht regiment.

In The Hague on 18 October 1648, he married Mary Killigrew and they produced two sons. From 1659 until 1666 he was governor of his nephew, the Prince of Orange and the future King William III of England. When, in April 1666, the young Prince was declared a ward of the State, his involvement ended to the regret of the Prince who had become attached to him.

He became a Lieutenant-General on 17 January 1668 and Governor of Breda on 2 April 1670; General of the Infantry on 12 April 1672. In August 1672 he became involved with the preparations for the murder of Johan de Witt and his brother. Shortly afterwards he joined the war effort and died in battle on 12 October 1672 near Grevenbrugge.
