He was born on 20 October 1668 in Utrecht and was a member of the nobles of that province. After William III became King of England, and as heir to his father the renowned Godard van Reede-Ginkel, he was naturalised in 1696.
When his father died in 1703 he became 2nd Earl of Athlone. However, he was still Lieutenant-Governor of the Dutch forces and Governor of Sluys.
In 1710, after the siege of St. Venant, he was taken prisoner. In 1715 he married Henriette van Nassau-Zuylenstein and they became the parents of three children. He died in Sluys only four years after his marriage on 15 August 1719.
