Like his elder brother, he was educated at the University of Marburg
in Hessen. When his brother died there, he became 3rd Earl of Athlone at
the age of nineteen. In 1742, at the age of twenty-five, he married Louisa
Isabella Hermelina van Wassenaer, granddaughter of the Earl of Portland,
and
they became the parents of four children. When he died at the age of
thirty, he occupied a position of power in the province of Utrecht where
he and his family lived. His widow survived him for only nine years.
