In 1844 he entered the army, 1st Life Guards, and from 1861 to 1868
was Lieutenant-Colonel; he became Major General in 1877; and Lieutenant
General in 1881. From 1847 to 1852 he was State Steward to the Lord Lieutenant
of Ireland; from 1870 to 1872 equerry to the Queen. In 1854 he married
Lady Jane St.Maur Blanche Stanhope and they became the parents of seven
children. He died in 1882 aged fifty-seven while his wife survived until
1907.
