At Cambridge he became friendly with the younger Pitt. Together they
stood successfully as Members of Parliament for the University in 1784,
and retained his seat until 1811 when he succeeded his father as 4th Duke
of Grafton. He became Lord-Lieutenant of Suffolk in 1790 and
held other offices.
His main interests were racing and hunting. He had inherited his father's
magnificent stud at Euston and between them they apparently won nearly
œ250,000 on the turf. He won the Derby once, the Oaks six times and the
One Thousand Guineas five times. He was a popular Master of Foxhounds.
At the coronation of King William IV on 8 September 1831, he was the
bearer of St. Edward's crown. In 1834 he received the Garter.
