In 1622 he studied in Kassel. In 1627 he became a Captain in the Dutch
Infantry; then, in 1637, a major. In 1638 he was captured but in 1639 the
Dutch Government paid a ransom to have him released. In 1647, at the age
of forty-one, he married his thirty-eight-year-old cousin Princess Mauritia
Eleonora of Portugal, but their marriage remained childless. In 1648 he
was appointed Commander of Rijnberk and in 1658 Governor of Bergen-op-Zoom.
On 6 May 1664 he was elevated and became a Prince (Fuerst) of the Holy
Roman Empire. On 16 June 1674 his wife died in Bergen-op-Zoom, where he
also died a few months later on 2 October 1674. By an unknown woman he
had fathered one illegitimate daughter, Margaretha Sofia, who
married Johan Fer, a secretary of the Prince of Orange.
