Geoffroy de Villehardouin, Sire
de Villehardouin et de Villy (1160-1213)
Born circa 1160 Chateau Villehardouin, Aube
Died 1213 / June 1218
Married before 1172
NN de Villemaur
In 1185 he was appointed Marshall of Champagne. He took part in the
fourth Crusade and, after his arrival in Constantinople, was appointed
Marshall of 'Romania' as well as Baron of Makri and Trajanopolis. As 'the
first vernacular historian of France, who possesses literary merit', he
wrote 'Conqueste de Constantinople', describing the events from 1198 to
1207, which is of even greater value as literature than as history.
