After studying at the Amsterdam Athenaeum, he went to the Academy in
Utrecht where, on 27 February 1833, obtained a degree in law. From 1830
till 1834 he was in the army, a lieutenant and later a captain, fighting
the Belgians at Hechtel, Hechteren and Houthalen. From 1834 till 1838 he
was a lawyer in Amsterdam from where he went to Drente. On 31 May 1839
in Utrecht he married Jkvr. Carolina Petronella de Geer and they became
the parents of ten children.
