In 1642 he married Eleonora van Nassau, an illegitimate daughter of
Prince Maurits, and they became the parents of four children. He joined
the Dutch army in 1646 but in 1657 became a Colonel in the Life Guard of
the Elector of Brandenburg.
In 1666 he became a General-major and in 1670 Governor of Berlin.
On 30 October 1670 he was ennobled when becoming a Freiherr (Baron)
and on 15 July 1672 the Dutch Government honoured him with a golden chain
worth œ1,200 and a golden medal worth œ100. He died in Berlin in 1679.
