On 30 August 1638 he was served heir to his father and grandfather
and obtained a pension in 1639. In 1648 as Colonel of Horse, he was in
"the Engagement" to rescue King Charles I and, later on, raised a regiment
for Charles II. On 12 August 1652, under
Cromwell's Act of Grace, he was fined œ2,000. On 7 January 1658 at
Kinnaird, he married Lady Katherine Carnegie, daughter of the Earl of Southesk.
Having resigned his dignities to the Crown, he received a new grant
thereof, on 13 November 1666, to him and the heirs male or female of his
body, which failing, to the heirs he should appoint, remainder to the heirs
male and of tailzee and provision in the former
limitations, remainder to his heirs male, and finally to his heirs
whatsoever. Having executed a nomination of his successor on 16 February
1674, he died, aged 42, six weeks later.
