He had a turbulent political career, the low point of which was probably
his hanging in absentia in 1851 for political activities during the 1848
revolution. Franz Joseph pardoned him in 1857, and in 1867 appointed him
Minister President of Hungary. He was a close
friend and confidant of the Empress Elisabeth, and through her intercession
with the Emperor he gained a number of important concessions for Hungary.
